Choosing a Home Grinder

When it comes to making a great cup of coffee at home, there are so many variables. What brewing method to use, how much coffee to use, what temperature the water should be at and on and on. But there is one piece of equipment that every coffee set up requires, and it is super versatile, THE GRINDER. The grinder is one of the most taken for granted pieces of equipment. People spurge on the most expensive brewers and siphons, and then use a blade grinder which chops and heats the coffee, ultimately ruining the final cup. And then there are the people who can’t be bothered with grinding. They buy their coffee pre-ground and are forced to then enjoy flat cups that lack flavor and aroma.

THERE IS A BETTER WAY!

Enjoying a cup of coffee does not require the purchase of the most expensive grinder, just a grinder with a few basic essentials.

1. Only buy burr grinders.
There are two types of basic burr sets available: Flat and Conical. The conical will generally run you a little more money, but depending on what you will be brewing, it may be the better investment. I generally find that the flat burr grinders work well in limited use and if you are only brewing drip coffee.

If you are going to be using this grinder on a regular basis and for espresso as I do, I highly recommend investing in the conical burr set. The conical burrs are larger and produce a more even particle size and will allow you to grind finer than a traditional flat burr. The conical burr grinders generally also run at a much slower RPM. The Capresso for instance grinds at 12,000 RPM for a flat burr and only 420 RPM for a conical burr. The larger burrs allow for the coffee to spend less time in contact with burrs and the slower RPM keeps the grinder cooler and prevents the coffee from absorbing any heat the grinder might put off.

2. Don’t worry about automatic grind measurements.
Many grinders give you an option to grind for a specific amount of cups, but if you truly want a good cup of coffee you will measure out how much coffee you need based on your brewing method, not on what your grinder is set on. A good rule of them is start with 2 Tbls of ground coffee for every 6oz of water.

3. Buy grinders that easily come apart for cleaning.
Be sure to keep all of your coffee equipment clean and residue free. Coffee oils that are left to stale will add a rancid flavor to the cup and will interfere with the aromas of the fresh coffee grinding. A grinder that requires a lot of skill to take apart and put together is a grinder that you probably won’t clean that often.

4. Only buy grinders that allow you to replace the burrs.
Just like we tell coffee house owners, a grinder should outlast most of your equipment, assuming you are taking care of it and regularly changing your burrs. Replacing the burrs ensures you getting an even particle size and even extraction.
